This Must Be The Place - 6 Designers on Discovering Boutiq Places

Design.

It’s a recurring passion throughout the globally spread Boutiq community. From the literal to the conceptual, it seems it’s really the ‘devil in the details’ when it comes to appreciating the favourite places we discover as travellers (AKA, Boutiq Places). For this Story piece we’ve tapped into the recommendations from some of our earliest app users, trending Ambassadors and even newly featured app guests to explore the elements comprising the discoveries really worth writing home about…

The Right Structure.

Architect X travel photographer Aida Rivero has recommended some of the most wishlisted gems on the Boutiq app for Spain and Morocco. The Canary Islands based jet-setter looks for innovative and clever use of space for the places that draw her eye.

Recent Boutiq recommendation: Buena Vista Country Suites on Lanzarote. ‘The design is amazing and breakfast is produced on their garden, plus you have the volcano views all around. A dream come true…’

The Right Touches.

Georgia Macmillan, Textile Designer and Artist

Aussie export Georgia Macmillan is known for her stylish taste when it comes to fashion and decorations, so how does this translate when picking where to eat? The Dubai-based designer’s recent mediterranean trip was all about finding the most authentic gems away from the tourist crowd. One such place was The Balcony, on The Cyclades Island of Paros. ‘A stunning dinner spot that was tourist-free, full of locals and holidaying Greeks.’ (Side note: is there anything better than not overhearing English from neighbouring tables whilst travelling?)

Boutiq recommendation: Cibus Restaurant, Céglie Messápica, Puglia. ‘The outstanding Cibus is hidden amidst the narrow streets of one of our favourite villages (which we have no idea how to pronounce!). It’s everything we seek as tourists not wanting to be ‘tourists’.

The Right Composition.

Jason Mowen, Interior Designer

Interior designer Jason Mowen’s inspiration is constantly drawn from history and the arts. A recent trip to Antwerp was an opportunity to absorb the city’s elegant mix of enchanting renaissance architecture and bold, emerging modern projects. In our next Boutiq Story we’ll be taking a deep dive into Belgium’s ‘capital of cool’ with Jason’s guide to Antwerp hotspots.

Boutiq recommendation: Kanaal, Antwerp (pictured above). ‘Kanaal is the epicentre of Axel Vervoordt’s art and design empire.  You’ll need an appointment to view the treasures contained within the Axel and May Vervoordt Foundation - think Lucio Fontana, James Turrell and Anish Kapoor interspersed with magnificent antiquities - but the Axel Vervoordt Gallery is open 2-5pm every Thursday to Saturday (and Axel’s on-site Japanese restaurant is superb).’

The Right Path.

Lanné Tucker, Safari Designer

Chinzombo- Safari seclusion meets ‘not exactly roughing it’.

The ethos behind &Three Collective is the commitment to safari 'trips less travelled’. For Boutiq Ambassador Lanné and her &Three Co-Founders, discovering places to share with friends and clients means a search off the beaten path to find the real deal- no canned experiences, no packaged deals.

Recent Boutiq recommendation: Chinzombo, Zambia. ‘A beautifully interior designed camp on the water in South Luangwa National Park. Chill in your private pool or have a massage on your deck to end a perfect day in the ‘bush’…’

The Right Taste.

Vanessa Milanja, Fashion Designer

Australian fashion designer Vanessa Milanja has been contributing Boutiq app hidden gems from Croatia (amongst other locations) that keep traditions and locally sourced ingredients at their core. Having familial roots in Zadar, the ancient town and its neighbouring islands hold a special place in the designer’s heart. ‘I recommend visiting Opat to everyone heading for Croatia, you can only reach it by boat.’

Recent Boutiq recommendation: Konoba Opat, Kornati. ‘You’ll need to call in advance to pre-hold the fish you want, caught fresh on the day. It’s open for lunch and dinner and it’s lovely to stay over night. Below the restaurant is a bar, so you can party until all hours!’

The Right MOOD.

Olivia Coléon, Atmosphere Designer

Great Huts, Port Antonio- The experience that ‘gets it all right’, according to Olivia Coléon.

The Vibe Project Founder Olivia Coléon knows that perfect places can’t rely on aesthetics alone. The atmosphere designer has capitalised on the need for restaurants, bars, hotels and even co-working spaces to consider how they will craft an ambience that hits every right note. ‘It’s easy for businesses to overlook the behavioural science behind their music choices and the customer experience…what “soul” these venues will achieve.’

Recent Boutiq recommendation: Great Huts Resort, Port Antonio. ‘They’ve mastered the eco-lodge with authentic huts and treehouses nestled into the side of the cliff. Lush jungles surround turquoise bays, and there is a real calmness and beauty that is unique to here.’
